Willie Mays was an American Hall of Fame baseball player, who played for the New York (later San Francisco) Giants.
In 2373, Jake Sisko and Nog got into trouble while trying to cheer up Benjamin Sisko by attempting to acquire a mint-condition 1951 Willie Mays rookie baseball card in an auction. Their quest for the card brought them into contact with Winn Adami, Elias Giger, and Weyoun. (DS9: "In the Cards")
- The baseball player Willie Hawkins, whom Captain Sisko envisioned in his "Benny Russell" vision in DS9: "Far Beyond the Stars", is so strikingly similar to Mays (he plays the same position at the same time for the same team, and references contemporaries of Mays) that it is possible Hawkins is simply a version of Mays imagined by Sisko for the vision.
