Yeoman Janice Rand

An unnamed yeoman aboard the Enterprise-A

Yeoman is a Starfleet title with administrative and clerical duties. Starfleet uses different rates of yeoman including "yeoman third class" as seen with Tina Lawton (TOS: "Charlie X"). Some yeoman, such as Janice Rand, were enlisted personnel during their time in this position. However, a yeoman can hold the rank of an officer as seen with Martha Landon (TOS: "The Apple") and an unnamed yeoman assigned to the Enterprise-A, who wore an officer's uniform with the rank of lieutenant junior grade (Star Trek V).

Janice Rand later underwent training to become an officer as well, but she no longer performed the duties of a yeoman (VOY: "Flashback").

Background

Gene Roddenberry always imagined a pretty young woman as his Star Trek captain's personal assistant, writing the first yeoman on Trek as Chris Pike's young Yeoman Colt in TOS: "The Cage". There was a Yeoman Smith in TOS: "Where No Man Has Gone Before", before the regular character of Yeoman Janice Rand was established. Since these were all different versions of the same character, and many other yeomen (or yeowomen) were established later as replacements for Rand when Grace Lee Whitney left the series, it gave the appearance that Starfleet only awarded this grade to pretty young females, although this hardly seemed plausible. However, male yeomen appeared in both The Animated Series and the Star Trek Movies. Additionally, Pike's comment in the "The Cage" that he cannot get used to seeing women on the bridge, indicates that his previous yeoman was male.

The likelihood, given that Starfleet rates (the proper terms for ranks) correspond to those in use in the United States Navy, is that "yeoman" refers to the job specialty, or "rating", of the individual in question rather than a rate (rank) of its own. A yeoman in this case is one who perform administrative and clerical duties, which fits the function of those referred to as "yeoman" in Star Trek.

In foreign translations of Star Trek, the yeowomen of TOS were usually not referred as yeoman or their rank was changed to "corporal", "sergeant" or other naval ranks.
