Commander Zakarian was a Starfleet officer assigned to Starfleet Academy in the 2360s as an instructor in survival training.

He earned the nickname "Old Sneezy" from some of his students as a result of his numerous allergies. Among the cadets he taught were B'Elanna Torres and Harry Kim.

In 2371, B'Elanna attempted to allay Harry's fears that he would die on his first mission by assuring him she knew some things that Old Sneezy hadn't taught her. Confused by the nickname, Kim asked who it was, and Torres identified Zakarian, asking if Kim remembered him and his apparent allergies to everything. Kim noted that he never cared for Zakarian. (VOY: "Caretaker")

This character was only mentioned in dialogue.

The Starfleet Academy Handbook gives him the first name Hans.
